Does anyone do any mill/turning with milling head and turning spindle on at the same time? I am wondering if I could increase my material removal rate turning off stock from a big shaft forging. I am not even sure if this works or how it does. I saw Mazak doing it at one of their open houses, on an e-1060v, but it was with real light cuts.

Mill turning works great on castings and forgings where you would otherwise have to machine it with a single point tool at vastly reduced SFM. Essentially you can throw several inserts to work instead of a single one. The best way to learn it is to chuck up a hunk of scrap aluminum and program an OD profile, treating the tool as a single point tool. Play with shifting the tool off the centerline and see what results are acceptable to you and go from there. It's pretty straightforward. You can take some healthy cuts, although I find shallower cuts at higher feedrates to be more productive and easier on the machine.

Thanks for the reply. Maybe I'll give it a try.
